<p>Low back pain does not discriminate. It affects everyone, at any age, for a variety of reasons. Low back pain affects people&#8217;s work, daily routine, and recreation. Americans spend about $50 billion or more each year on low back pain. It is the most common reason for job related disability and is the leading contributor for missed work. Low back pain is also the second most common neurological illness in the United States, with headache being the most common. Thankfully, the majority of occurrences of low back pain disappear within a few days. Others lead to more serious conditions or even take much longer to clear up.</p>
<p>Short-term or acute low back pain lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Acute low back pain is automatic in nature, which is a result from any disorder like arthritis, or from trauma to the lower back. Trauma pain can be caused by sports injury, work in the garden or around the house, or sudden jolts from car accidents or other incidents, or other stress on the spinal tissues and bones. Symptoms of low back pain can range from muscle ache to stabbing or shooting pain, limited range of motion and flexibility, and even the inability to stand up straight. Sometimes, the pain felt in one part of the body can be from a disorder or injury elsewhere in the body. <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain" title="Pain" rel="wikipedia">Acute pain</a> syndromes can become much more serious if it goes untreated.</p>
<p>Bone strength and muscle elasticity and tone tend to decrease as people age. The discs in the back begin to lose flexibility and fluid, and that decreases the ability to cushion the vertebrae.</p>
<p>Low back pain can occur when someone overstretches or lifts something that is too heavy, causing strain, sprain, or spasm in one of the muscles or ligaments in the lower back. If the spine becomes overly strained or compressed, the disc that is affected can rupture or bulge outward. This rupture may put pressure on one of more than fifty nerves that are rooted to the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinal_cord" title="Spinal cord" rel="wikipedia">spinal cord</a> that control body movements and send signals from the body to the brain. When these nerve roots are compressed or irritated in any way, back pain, including low back pain, can occur.</p>
<p>Low back pain can reflect muscle or nerve irritation or bone lesions. While often times, low back pain follows injury or trauma to the back, it can also be caused by viral infections, irritation to joints and discs, degenerative conditions such as disc disease or arthritis, osteoporosis or other bone diseases, or congenital abnormalities of the spine. Smoking, obesity, weight gain during pregnancy, poor physical condition, stress, bad posture for the activity being performed, and even poor sleeping positions can contribute to low back pain. In addition, scar tissue from a previously injured back does not have the flexibility or strength of normal, healthy tissue. Build up of this scar tissue from previous injuries will weaken the back and lead to more serious injury.</p>
<p>Sometimes low back pain may mean a more serious medical problem. Pain that is accompanied by fever or loss of bladder or bowel control, pain when coughing, and weakness in the legs may indicate a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiculopathy" title="Radiculopathy" rel="wikipedia">pinched nerve</a> or other serious problem. Diabetics can have severe low back pain or leg pains related to neuropathy. Those with these symptoms should contact their doctor to help prevent more permanent damage.</p>

<p>When most people think of chiropractic techniques, the standard neck or back adjustment is what comes to mind.  However to understand why <a class="zem_slink" title="Chiropractic" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiropractic">chiropractic care</a> is so useful, it is imperative to be aware that doctors of chiropractic have a lot more tricks up their sleeves other than just the famous back adjustment.  Chiropractors treat more areas of the body than just the spine.  These highly trained professionals go to school for in depth training of techniques and when and where they are appropriate, as well as detailed study of how the body works in relation to all aspects of health.  <a class="zem_slink" title="Muscle" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle">Muscle</a> and bones are just a part of their training.  They also are taught how disease and injury affect each region of the body and how to treat it for optimum healing.  Take a look at some of the chiropractic techniques you may be less familiar with.</p>
<p>One of the most interesting of the chiropractic techniques is known as the applied kinesiology technique.  This one deals with more than just the alignment of the spine and joints.  The placement of the bones can&#8217;t be correct unless the muscles surrounding them are in correct placement as well.  Using light massage and manipulation of the <a class="zem_slink" title="Acupressure" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acupressure">acupressure</a> points, chiropractors can encourage normal and healthy muscle function.  This restored balance helps the bones move back into the proper ailment.  This technique is an interesting look at how all the systems of the body work together as one.</p>
<p>Since the spine related adjustments are the most familiar to most of us, here&#8217;s a look at some of the spine chiropractic techniques and what they are used to correct.  The Cox flexion distraction is first up on our list.  This technique involves using stretching or traction of the spine to correct <a class="zem_slink" title="Human back" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_back">lower back</a> pain and misalignment.  The Thompson terminal point technique is another one of the frequently used techniques.  Using a special drop style table, this technique is used to adjust the entire spine.  Another fascinating example of the dynamic of how different areas of the body can adversely affect a seemingly unrelated area of the body is neck pain.  In some cases the Sacro-Occipital technique is used.  The patient lies on their back with padded blocks placed under the pelvic region.  This allows the body to adjust itself and reduce neck pain.  There are hundreds of other techniques chiropractors can use to improve the performance of the body and promote <a class="zem_slink" title="Pain management" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain_management">pain relief</a>.  These are just a few.</p>
<p>The various chiropractic techniques are an interesting look at how every area of the body directly impacts its neighbor.  Understanding the purpose of some of the things your chiropractor may do is a good way to reduce fear of the unknown and take a proactive stand in your own health care.</p>
<p>Each of the chiropractic techniques was designed to heal a specific problem.  These techniques help to relieve pain, improve joint flexibility, and increase body function without the use of medications or surgeries.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While you may routinely think to seek chiropractic care for yourself, you may be wondering if it is safe for your child. Chiropractic and children work very well together. Starting from birth, children provided chiropractic care can benefit greatly. </p>
<p>Newborns often experience spinal issues during the birth process. This stress can affect the developing nervous system, resulting in colic, sleep disturbances, nursing difficulties and breathing problems. A quick visit to the chiropractor can realign anything that is out of place and relieve many of these discomforts. </p>
<p>As babies grow, they have the possibility of being affected by spinal issues when they learn to hold up their head, when they learn to sit, to crawl and to walk. All the falls, bumps and just their normal activities have the potential to affect their spinal vertebrae. While the trauma may be minor, left to itself it may develop into a long-term problem as the child grows. A simple check up by a chiropractor will make sure everything is still in alignment for proper growth and development. This doesn&#8217;t mean you need to rush your child to the chiropractor every time they lose their balance, but occasional preventative treatments can find and correct these issues before they create problems. </p>
<p>As a child grows and starts activities like skating, biking or sports, they may experience various traumas. <p>If a child is injured in a sports accident or a car accident, this is a good time to make sure their tiny spine was not injured in any way. <p>While most spinal issues are next to impossible to ascertain for parents, there are a few signs to watch for. The choices each of us makes each and every day are important for our family&#8217;s welfare as well as the welfare of our neighborhood, our community, our city, our country, and our global society.</p>
<p>We do not often consider that a healthy personal lifestyle &#8211; relating to fitness and nutrition &#8211; has an impact on the environment and the global biosphere. But our personal choices and actions do matter. Our life-affirming choices to get fit, be fit, and eat right affect everyone and everything around us. How you get to work is a perfect example.</p>
<p>Of course, most of us drive to work, as it is a lifetime habit, and we don&#8217;t even think about it. But, driving always produces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions &#8211; every gallon of gas burned pumps 17 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.</p>
<p>Biking to work and walking to work are fitness-promoting activities that have a double benefit.1,2 You are exercising on your workdays and you&#8217;re actively helping to reduce GHG emissions and stabilize the Earth&#8217;s climate.</p>
<p>If it&#8217;s too far to walk or bike to your place of employment, arrange to car pool with co-workers and walk or bike to their house on the days when you&#8217;re not the designated driver. Planting a garden or participating in the activities of a community garden is a health-promoting action step that has a triple benefit.</p>
<p>First, you&#8217;re producing or helping to produce foods that are grown locally. Foods consumed in the United States travel an average of 1500 miles to reach your local supermarket. Foods grown locally eliminate almost all of the fossil fuel resources required to transport non-local items.</p>
<p>Second, you are adding really fresh vegetables to your family&#8217;s diet, providing vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals required for abundant good health.</p>
<p>Third, gardening is exercise &#8211; the kind of exercise people used to get when they did not sit in chairs at desks all day long.</p>
<p>The benefits of health-promoting activities keep on coming.3 For the most part, healthy people don&#8217;t wind up in the local hospital emergency room. Resources saved include fossil fuels burned by high-speed ambulances, fossil fuels burned to produce electricity used to power life-saving medical devices, and energy utilized to produce the vast amounts of medical supplies consumed in an emergency procedure, including syringes, IV set-ups, and towels, wipes, and disinfectants.</p>
<p>To be a healthy individual as a member of a healthy family has a huge multiplying effect. Your chiropractor knows that all body systems are deeply interconnected and must work together to produce good health. So too are the many different living systems that make up Planet Earth. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>America&#8217;s weight problems are now so well-known they&#8217;re even fair game for jokes at the Oscars. &#8220;Americans really know how to fill up a seat,&#8221; jibes Ellen DeGeneres, host of the 2007 Academy Awards.</p>
<p>The statistics are alarming. Sixty-five percent of Americans &#8211;0 million in 2001 &#8211; are overweight. Fifteen percent of American children are overweight (up from four percent only 20 years ago). Health care costs related to overweight Americans has ballooned to $117 billion (that&#8217;s billion) in 2003. And the numbers keep going up. The scales do not lie.</p>
<p>And yet, diet and weight-loss books fill our nation&#8217;s bookstores. Low-carb diets. High-protein diets. The cabbage soup diet. The grapefruit diet. The raw foods diet. Most people we know have tried one or more of these. The new diet works for a while, then we can&#8217;t take the deprivation any longer and break the diet. Then, horrifyingly, all the weight we lost comes right back, and we&#8217;re right back where we started. Or possibly even a few pounds heavier. The very good news is that a real, long-lasting solution exists. The basics of this healthy approach to long-term weight loss have been known for decades. This solution is not a diet. It doesn&#8217;t have a catchy name. There are, though, a few &#8220;magic&#8221; secrets to this food plan that works.</p>
<p>&#8220;Secret&#8221; Number 1 &#8211; eat six small meals throughout each day, separated by 2.5 to 3 hours &#8220;Secret&#8221; Number 2 &#8211; combine protein and carbohydrates in each meal &#8220;Secret&#8221; Number 3 &#8211; drink plenty of water (eight to ten glasses) throughout the day &#8220;Secret&#8221; Number 4 &#8211; eat two portions of vegetables each day &#8220;Secret&#8221; Number 5 &#8211; take one day off each week (a &#8220;free&#8221; day) and eat whatever you want, whenever you want Why combine protein and carbohydrate at each meal? This critical combination feeds our muscles by providing the amino acids (from protein) necessary to build and maintain muscle tissue, and the carbohydrate needed to shuttle the amino acids into the cells. If the carbs are not there the protein doesn&#8217;t get used. There&#8217;s also a human performance benefit &#8211; eating balanced meals enables better cognitive/mental function. So we&#8217;re not only getting healthier on this food plan, we&#8217;re getting smarter!1</p>
<p>Why eat six times a day? Studies have shown this approach results in a faster metabolic rate, a lower percentage of body fat, and reduced &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol levels, all while maintaining lean muscle mass.2,3 Each meal contains approximately 300 calories (proteins and carbohydrates in each meal are in &#8220;portion&#8221; sizes). That&#8217;s it! This sensible, easy approach to food allows you to eat everything &#8211; there are no restrictions. And, on your free day you can indulge, or not, letting your natural instincts guide you.</p>

<p>Aside from spinal adjustments, the chiropractor has different ways to relieve sciatica pain and help you regain mobility and strength, as some chiropractors use physical therapy alongside the manipulations. A chiropractor will also be able to teach you about exercise, proper body mechanics and ergonomics to prevent back pain from recurring.
