Millions of people suffer from back pain unnecessarily when there is actually a very simple solution, according to Jesse Cannone , certified personal trainer and back pain specialist. “Unfortunately, many people are led to believe that back pain is normal and were all supposed to experience it… well, thankfully, that’s not the case. Eliminating back pain is not nearly as difficult as most people think or are led to believe… it can actually be easy!” says Cannone.

Here’s the simple system that MUST be followed if you are looking for real, long-term, lasting relief:

1. Identify the cause – nearly all of the treatments people receive for back pain only focus on the symptoms and the health care professionals zoom in on only the problem area. The real key in eliminating back pain is to find out exactly what’s causing the problem… and most of the time it’s not even the back!

2. Address both the cause and the symptom – the best approach is a combination of treating the symptoms for pain relief while also addressing the underlying cause.

3. Be aware – many people suffering from back pain are not in tune with their bodies and during their treatment they do not realize what is working and what is not. In order to achieve long-term relief you have to understand how your body works, what’s causing the problem, and what changes have to be made to correct it.

4. Consistent Focused Action – achieving success in anything requires consistency and focused action. Most people with back pain won’t make the time to work on their problem each day… instead they take pain killers which mask the pain and allow them to cause more damage while they continue with their life.

5. Don’t do what doesn’t work – we already know that most traditional treatments for back pain don’t work…. why waste your time, energy, and money? The real key to eliminating back pain is to identify the true cause of the pain and then address it with a combination of treatments to treat both the cause and symptoms. Over 80% of all back pain is caused by muscle imbalances… NOT a lack of pain killers or surgery! Find out what’s going on in your body and take action.

Conquering the Pain Beast with Exercises for Lower Back Pain

When you have lower back pain it can feel as if you’re carrying around a beast that won’t let go. Sitting, twisting, bending and even walking can be difficult and as a result, it’s tempting to reduce the level of activity. Unfortunately that’s the worst thing you can do. The less you do the more it’s going to hurt. Think of it this way. When you aren’t doing anything to improve the pain, why would you expect it to improve? In other words, if you don’t to exercises for lower back pain, how are the muscles going to get stronger?

Lower back pain is the result of both emotional and physical factors. They are intertwined and can’t be separated. Exercises for lower back pain don’t just deal with muscles. They also deal with your mental state that makes you believe lack of exercise is the cure for back pain. Exercise can help you adjust your attitude, get some feel-good endorphins flowing and strengthen your back.

Of course, some lower back pain will need surgical correction if the result of degenerative disease for example. But even in that situation, exercise serves the same purpose. It can reduce the amount of back pain you are experiencing while waiting for surgery by strengthening the muscles. Getting your lower back muscles into good shape will also help you recover faster from the surgery. Exercise is just plain good for you whether you have back pain or not.

Exercises for lower back pain include a variety of exercises that include even aerobic conditioning. The lower back muscles and bones are just a subset of your overall muscular skeletal structure. Whatever you do for the lower back benefits the entire system, and it works the other way around too. The better shape your body is in overall, the better for your lower back. If you are out of shape or overweight, both conditions can contribute to lower back pain.

Following is a list of some exercises for lower back pain. You can do these exercises at home, but if you’re under the care of a doctor it’s important to show the physician the plan. The important thing is to do them regularly. You can’t do them for a few days and then quit and expect to see results. It may hurt at first, but if you stick with the program you’ll be amazed at how the pain beast begins to let go.

• Abdominal contractions
• Wall slides or squats
• Straight leg raises
• Alternating knee to chest
• Treadmill
• Stationary bike
• Balance ball arm and leg raises (lie on stomach)

There are others you can do too. You should start with 3 ten minute sessions a day and add time as your muscles get stronger. Exercises for lower back pain can scare the pain beast away so you can restore your lively step to your daily activities.

Chronic back pain affects thousands of people every year. Whether it’s from the result of an accident, stress on the back, pulled muscle or some unknown reason, the pain is still the same. There are many different types of treatment offered for this painful problem. Most people prefer non-surgical treatment for chronic back pain. It isn’t only the patients that prefer non-surgical treatment for chronic back pain. Most doctors don’t like to do surgery unless they absolutely have no other choice.

There are some painful back conditions where surgery may be preferred such as degenerative spondylolisthesis and severe sciatica. Even in these two cases, non-surgical treatment has helped, but the surgery provided a much faster pain relief. Surgery is also performed in certain cases where it’s necessary and the only way for the patient to be able to function normally. In the majority of cases with back problems, non-surgical treatment for chronic back pain is the recommended and preferred course by patients and their doctors.

Patients seeing their doctor for the first time for chronic back pain will be treated conservatively. The first thing they will want to do is rule out cancer, infection or an emergency problem. The first non-surgical treatment for chronic back pain most doctors recommend is to apply heat and get rest. They may give you a prescription for muscle relaxants and request you take over the counter pain relievers. In some cases, the pain relievers will lessen the pain, while the rest and heat may help the pain go away. For the pain to be labeled as chronic back pain, the patient has had it for a few months, in which case, the pain requires more than heat, rest and pain relievers. The doctors want to try everything first, however.

If you have to return to see the doctor, the next non-surgical treatment for chronic back pain is physical therapy. More doctors are recommending physical therapy for all kinds of injuries of the body. A physical therapist is trained to work with the body and know how it should and should respond to certain conditions.

The Physical therapist will apply heat and/or ice to the injured area along with massaging the back. Although, this may hurt when it’s being performed, it often makes your back feel much better later. You will be scheduled to see the therapist anywhere from once a week to a few times a week. The therapist will also give you exercises for your back for you to do at home. In many cases, physical therapy will take care of the chronic back pain after a few weeks.

If the physical therapy doesn’t work completely, another non-surgical treatment for chronic back pain is injections or pain relievers or steroids. These are often very helpful along with the therapy. These are also referred to as non-invasive treatment as opposed to surgery, which is invasive.

Chronic low back pain has plagued thousands of individuals for many years causing much pain and discomfort as well as time off from work or their daily routines. There has usually been the same traditional type of treatment methods and strategies to cure this painful problem. Recently, doctors have been notified of chronic low back pain treatment guidelines regarding the methods of low pain treatment.

The reasons for the chronic low back pain treatment guidelines is that there is a variety of different treatment methods and different costs, yet most of the results are the same. The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society have made and entire group of chronic low back pain treatment guidelines for doctors to use with each patient. They want each patient to be treated differently based on certain factors.

Grab your FREE copy of the 7 Day Back Pain Cure – Click Here

One of the factors in the chronic low back pain treatment guidelines states that the causes of the back pain should be put in specific categories such as mechanical back pain like vertebra, disc, facet joints, nerve root, spinous process and traverse process; congenital conditions like scoliosis; infections, tumors and diseases; and injuries like sports injuries or whiplash.
Prior to the setting of chronic low back pain treatment guidelines, almost all of these back problems were treated in the same variety of ways with usually the same results.

Another factor in the chronic low back pain treatment guidelines is that there should be certain criteria on if X-rays and other imaging tests will be taken on the patient. This criteria will depend on what kind of back pain the patient is suffering and why. Yet another factor is what type of back pain the patient should get certain medications prescribed and what kind they should be. Whether they are prescription, alternative, holistic, physical therapy or massage will be determined by what type works best for a specific back pain.

By using the chronic low back pain treatment guidelines, it is the hope that patients will be successfully treated for their back pain much sooner without having to go through so many different treatments. This will also save on medical bills and help keep health costs down. The rising cost of health care has been a problem steadily the past few years and hopefully these new guidelines will help the situation.

When these chronic low back pain treatment guidelines are used all the time, the patients will know what treatment they are getting and why they are getting it as well as understanding their case better.

A bulging disc is when the spongy material between vertebrae extends out. It’s usually caused by too much pressure that’s been put on the spine causing excessive compression. There are lots of nerves that run out from the disc, so when the disc bulges near one of the nerves, pain develops. The pain isn’t necessarily in the back though. The pain can run down the nerves and end up making your legs or even your arms hurt.

The fact is though, you can have a herniated disc and not have any pain. You can actually have a bulging disc that doesn’t affect a nerve and so there’s no pain. The indications you have a back problem include other things like tingling and numbness in the legs. So don’t think you have to have pain when you have a bulging or herniated disc.

The best treatment options

When it comes to treating a herniated disc, there are traditional
treatments such as ice/heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation,
cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications and even surgery.
While these may deliver some relief, it will usually be temporary
if at all.

But the major problem with these traditional treatments is that they
can’t fix or heal a herniated disc as they do not address the actual
cause of the problem. For example, even if you were to have a surgery
and get some pain relief, the fact is the dysfunctions that caused
the disc to herniated in the first place are still there and if not
addressed, they will continue to place uneven pressure and strain on
the discs and sooner or later you will likely have another problem
with that disc, or others.

Without identifying and addressing the underlying cause of the problem,
which is the physical dysfunctions caused by imbalances in muscles,
you will likely continue to suffer with this condition and the
continuous flare ups for years.
Unfortunately, most doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists
don’t spend time or focus on identifying the physical dysfunctions that
are responsible for the condition so most people end up jumping from
one useless traditional treatment to the next and suffer for months or
years unnecessarily.

If you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc, or are wondering if
your back pain may be caused by a herniated disc, either way you must
identify and address the physical dysfunctions that are causing your
pain as part of your recovery.

The world doesn’t stop for back pain. That means you may get a few days off because of back pain, but eventually you have to go to work. The best thing to do is learn some office moves and positions that will keep your spine muscles from tightening and your spine from compressing. You also want to prevent back pain as much as possible of course.

When you’re at work try doing some light spine stretching exercises throughout the day. You don’t have to make a big scene. You just need to do some things like forward stretches, neck rolls and some twisting moves. You should do these exercises gently though and don’t go overboard with the twisting moves. The goal is to keep the back limber so it doesn’t tense up. If you need a new chair that gives low back support, you should show your boss proof you have a back problem. Most companies go out of their way today to accommodate health problems.

Once you have injured your body, particularly your back, it may take you a very long time to get back into shape. The treatments for back pain vary from pain pills to rest to stretching, but there is one more arrow in the quiver that most people do not realize works as well, if not better than any of these treatments for some recipients.

With the utilization of rapid movements which are designed to reposition your bones to properly line up, chiropractors re-aligning your body. Some people are a little taken aback by the twisting or cracking that accompanies any good adjustment, but don’t fear. Afterward, there can be some minor pain or discomfort but that does decrease rapidly in most cases. You will feel better once that soreness goes away, since you are better aligned now.

To be most successful, Chiropractic treatment must be utilized regularly to be effective. Usually one to two times per week is enough to bring about proper alignment while allowing the body enough time to heal itself too. Sometimes a comprehensive chiropractic treatment plan will involve several treatments over the course of several months, and others may only need to visit once a month, but either way successful spinal re-alignment can be an involved process.

Upon visiting your chiropractor you will be twisted and turned into various positions for adjustment, so expect that. You adjustment will usually involve you lying on your back or stomach while you are positioned for adjustment by the doctor. Your body will be adjusted as you need, then you will be moved into a different positions to adjust another joint.

After aligning certain joints, the doctor may adjust other smaller joints that may be limited in their range of motion as well. Once the doctor has your into the perfect position to be effective a rapid series of motions are applied for the adjustment. Before scheduling your next visit, your doctor may ask you to relax on the roller table or another massage machine.

You will almost invariably experience a reduction in pain and an increase in your range of motion in your body after adjustment. The long term goals of chiropractic treatment do include pain reduction and returned mobility, especially in the back.

Back pain can keep you from doing the things you love as well as the things that you need to do. There are some exercises that you need to learn about to prevent back pain.

For the first two days after an acute injury your doctor may want you to have bed rest. Just after an injury, your may be having muscle spasms. This is your body telling you that you have an injury and that you should not move. During these two days, lying on a hard bed may relieve the spasms.

Once you have reached two days, it is time to get back out of bed and start moving. If you stay in bed too long, the muscles become weak and healing takes longer.

Getting back to a normal schedule makes recovery quicker for most people. Normal activities are better that remaining in bed or beginning a new exercise program for quick healing.

Once you have recovered completely from your injury, stay away from those activities that may be considered as high impact. In a few days you may want to increase your walking or start swimming. These activities that are considered low impact help to strengthen the back muscles. Stretching may also be used as it increased circulation, a key to healing. Warm showers are also useful in keeping muscles loose.

At some time between two and eight weeks, the back pain should be gone and you will be able to do more strenuous exercises. The doctor or therapist will help you to develop an exercise program to strengthen muscles without causing further injury.

Exercises need to target core muscles. Muscles in the buttocks, abdomen and back all support the spine. If these muscles are strengthened, then the back becomes stronger. This can take stress off the joints of the back and is an essential step to prevent recurring lower back pain.

Strengthen core muscles in order to prevent or reduce back pain. In fact, many people find that these steps will actually eliminate back pain altogether.

When muscles are not stretched regularly they shorten in length. Shortened muscles will cause misalignment of your spine which can cause pain and make you more likely to injure your back. Stretching exercises may help as the shortened muscles are lengthened. It is not just muscles in the back that may cause trouble, but also the buttocks, hamstrings and the quadriceps that may give you alignment problems. Stretching those muscles can give mobility to your spine.

If you do have a back injury, the doctor may give you a prescription for pain medication. Regular strengthening of core muscles will help to to prevent further injuries and pain.

An Intervertebral Disc, or Spinal Disc, has two main components. The first, the annulus fibrosis, is the outer layer. This can be likened to the dough part of a jelly doughnut. The second, inner layer, comparable to the jelly portion of a jelly doughnut is known as the nucleus polposus. The inner nucleus portion functions primarily as a fulcrum for movement and as a shock absorber to handle the impacts of movement.

To learn more about how the disc does this think of that jelly doughnut. Now, I want you to imagine what would happen to the jelly if you put some pressure on the front end of the doughnut. The jelly would migrate or move towards the back. The opposite would occur if you put pressure on the back portion of the doughnut. The disc functions in a similar manner and acts as a fulcrum upon which movement can occur. When one develops a prolapsed disc the jelly/ nucleus pulposis is forced out of the doughnut/ disc and may put pressure on the nerve located near the disc. This will give one the symptoms of sciatica or a corresponding radiculopathy (numbness/tingling/shooting pain/etc.).

As we get older our tissues dehydrate and this limits the shock absorbing capacity of the disc. The annular fibers get weaker with age and begin to tear more easily when subjected to repetitious stress. In many cases this doesn’t cause pain, while in some is does.

The medical term for disc which have begun to dehydrate is known as degenerative disc disease and if severe enough may be accompanied by bony changes termed spondylosis.

When the annulus fibrosus tears due to an injury or the aging process, the nucleus pulposus can begin to extrude through the tear. This is called disc herniation. Near the posterior side of each disc, all along the spine, major spinal nerves extend out to different organs, tissues, extremities etc. It is very common for the herniated disc to press against these nerves (pinched nerve) causing radiating pain, numbness, tingling, and diminished strength and/or range of motion. In addition, the contact of the inner nuclear gel, which contains inflammatory proteins, with a nerve can also cause significant pain. Nerve-related pain is called radicular pain.

Herniated discs are often referred to by any of the following names such as a slipped disc, ruptured disc, or a bulging disc. In medical terms there are three degrees of disc injury:

1. Protruded Disc

2. Extruded Disc

3. Sequestered Disc

Up until a few years ago surgery was the only option for those who failed therapy. A gap between these two groups left no other options for those who failed therapy. Soon you will learn about a new option that bridges the gap between failed therapy and surgery.

If you’ve failed conventional therapy at that point surgery is usually investigated as an option. However, the presence of incontinence, weakness and numbness of genital regions or function is known as cauda equina and considered an emergency situation requiring surgical intervention.

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that “limited evidence is now available to support some aspects of surgical practice.” Recently, additional randomized controlled clinical trials have refined the indications for surgical interventions.

Only after all other means have been exhausted should surgery be considered as an option.

Sciatica is a medical condition whereby you feel pain in the lower areas of the back right down to the lower limbs. The pain is restricted to numbness; tingling sensations and a weakened back and limbs. For those of us who haven’t experienced sciatica you can be rest-assured that there is nothing to worry about, it is a fairly subtle and treatable pain.

The word sciatica stems from the sciatic nerve which is by far the longest nerve in the human body. And as nerves are the strands of flesh that transmit impulses of pain and pleasure it is understandable that sciatic nerve pain has certain distinct features. When someone experiences sciatic pain they experience numbness in the lower back to lower limbs; a weakening of the limbs and a tingling sensation in the same areas.

A lot of causes have been cited as the sources of pain but only a few of those are actually real causes. When sciatic pain is triggered what would have happened is that pressure would have been applied against the sciatic nerve causing to swell. So when the nerve is swollen it is only natural that sensations will become distorted resulting in the numbness and tingly feeling. This is the case when you sit for a long time in an uncomfortable position.

On top of this the bone structures in the spinal column can be a direct cause of sciatica. When vertebrae in the column slip over each other when you fall awkwardly they exert pressure against the sciatic nerve. And again the impulses of sensation will become distorted and numbness can ensue.

Sciatic pain is a very normal form of pain, it’s the name that makes it seem like it is a complicated condition. Owing to this the treatments are very much simple. One remedy is the ice pack. Fill a plastic with ice and tie it close. After this take the ice-pack and rub it gently over the places you feel the most pain. Do this three times a day and you’ll be feeling a lot better by the morning of the next day.

If extreme cold against your spine is unbearable there is an option you can pursue. You can try out the heat-pack and get the same positive results. Take the usual bed warmer tube and fill it up with hot water. And just like the ice-pack rub it around the areas where you feel the most pain. Pain relief will follow a few hours afterwards depending on your condition.

Another form of treatment is massage therapy. With massage therapy the irregularities in the lower back causing swelling will be greatly readjusted. The good thing about a massage is that it triggers the release of ‘feel good’ hormones as well as relaxing muscles in the lower back. In addition to this you could also try acupuncture.
